The International Air Transport Association (IATA) launched the Operational Safety Audits (IOSA) program in 2001 to address two specific needs of the aviation industry: cost-effectiveness and safety. The air transport industry is subject to a growing proliferation of audits that often overlap in their intent and content. IOSA is changing this situation by introducing a single, agreed-upon, and common standard for these types of audits. Safety in airline operations remains the industry's highest priority.
Compliance with the IOSA program's standards and best practices helps airlines achieve operational safety in all key areas, as well as operate more efficiently. As a widely accepted audit program, IOSA can replace most codeshare audits currently conducted. An airline that has been audited and is compliant with IOSA standards projects a positive image regarding the integrity of its operations and its ability to manage associated risks, drastically reducing the number of operational audits it must undergo.
IOSA stands for operational excellence and, for the registered IOSA operator, there is greater potential for a whole range of opportunities (e.g., code-sharing, crewed leasing, aircraft leasing, etc.).
